Homegrown

I can’t call myself a rosarian since I had more failures than successes with my roses in the past few years. However, I have a massive amount of patience when it comes to plants and I enjoy cultivating them on my balcony, even though I have limited horticultural knowledge and space.

For several years my trusted gardening mentor had been Doreen, an octogenarian English lady from West London who really knew about growing plants. I would tell her about my diseased or non-blooming roses, and she would say, “Every rose has its own time.”

Doreen passed away two autumns ago, and I miss her terribly. Some of the better roses I have now were bought when we visited garden centres together.

This spring, despite of the lockdowns and pandemic sadness, my roses did exceptionally well. So, I decided to photograph the happy memory because not many things went according to plan in 2020.

In my “Homegrown” series, I try to photograph my gardening effort and how I improve, as a gardener and an observer of nature, from there.

I hope through this journey, I can improve as a person too.

The flowers I grow are imperfect unlike the ones sold at the florists. I use repurposed jars whenever I could, because that’s how I enjoy my plants every day. I also love watching the roots grow in the glass containers.

“Every rose has its own time.”
