About

After The Rain is a collection of writings to accompany my photography pieces, which is my train of thoughts in-between a hectic life in London and other places I travel to. It’s a meditation on nature and the lesser-heard inner voices; a sliver of silence in the middle of life’s noises.

This analogy comes from my own observations growing up near waterways and living around small tropical islands. I am constantly faced by the inner struggle to keep up with the unnatural fast pace of progress, while at the same time trying to hang on to the great outdoor life I was raised on.

My focus is directed on the riverine and seaside subjects, where I mostly spend my time. It also touches on water and environmental issues that I observed.

The project is my love letter to nature, my hope for it to prevail and my complicated relationship with it.

After The Rain also alludes to the feeling of calm and relief after a storm. You could say it’s about a new beginning after a turbulent passage.

Zarina Holmes is an author, photographer and graphic designer based in London, UK. She studied MA Design at Middlesex University, London and Arts & Design at UITM, Shah Alam, Malaysia. She writes on pop culture and visual arts.

Holmes is a fan of visual culture, manga and Eastern philosophy. Her work is an overlap of meditative subject matter and vivid lifestyle images. She’s a co-founder of an award-winning London agency, GLUE Studio.

Her journey into meditative photography started as a visualiser in advertising agencies, followed by a role as a creative editor for a UK travel publishing company, producing glossy magazines for tourism brands. Her hectic campaign work made her ponder about the impact of mental health in the media, sustainability and the consumerism culture that she helped create.

Holmes believes that a destination’s environmental identity is important for the population’s mental and physical wellbeing. After teaching photography for 10 years, Holmes decided to publish her thoughts and images as books to accompany her talks.
