Joy

My definition of joy is a type of delight that is short-lived but easy enough to return when you’re reminded of it.

Happiness, to me, comes with some expectations – letting go of miserable habits and developing a certain muscle for detachment from suffering. This is a long-term strategy which requires an effort, just like exercising the body.

So, my short-term strategy is my potted plants that give me plenty of joy even though I’m not the best gardener.

I never know exactly how the plants will turn out, so I let them surprise me.

I started to photograph my balcony garden a year after I started gardening. I didn’t plan anything because I didn’t want to make an art project about it. I just wanted to see if I could feel joy looking at my flower photos. Photo © Zarina Holmes, London.
