Shelter

I photographed the bullfrog couple during a monsoon season, when I was at my parent’s home. One morning at breakfast, my mum announced that there was a couple of frogs in the rainwater container. “I wanted to put the lid over the bucket but I don’t want to suffocate the frogs.”

I went to the backyard and took a peek. True enough, there were two adult frogs bobbing up and down the plastic bucket. They were quite weary of strangers, so they hid below the surface whenever they saw me. But after a few minutes they would float again for air.

The frogs were probably trying to mate or hide from predators like snakes until the rain was over. Frogs are sensitive to chlorinated water, so the rainwater container was a perfect temporary sanctuary.

“Maybe the frogs are fed up with the non-stop rain last night,” said my mum.

Our amphibian guests left the next morning. They made me think about relationship. Do frogs feel love like humans do, or were they just following their natural tendencies? I don’t know the answer to that.

However, I know for certain that my mother’s compassion kept them safe during a night of heavy rain.
