From photographic meditation to sustainability action. Exposure+ Photo 2022 talk

Discover how London-based photographer Zarina Holmes, transformed her photography meditation project, After the Rain, into sustainability initiative at GLUE Studio. The talk will highlight how she constructed the narrative via self-publish magazine, which led to collaborations with like-minded organisations. Suitable for creatives, designers, photographers and activists who wish explore workable solutions on the ground.

During the 2021 pandemic lockdown, I discovered two important things – I’m a gifted amateur gardener and a prolific accumulator of rubbish from my home shopping activities.

Two years earlier at HF Arts Festival in London, I presented my photography project, After the Rain, which discussed recycling waste export issues and its impact on my seaside home in Lumut and Pangkor Island. I thought we’d made a great progress towards sustainability, until the Covid19 pandemic hit.

I was forced to turn the lens onto my shrunken life in London during the travel restriction period. Between contemplations, I planted and harvested homegrown flowers throughout spring and summer. Then I photographed them in upcycled bottles against packaging wastes, acknowledging the fact that I’m both the creator and destroyer of my own environment.

This talk will highlight:

  • How my photography observations compelled me to take action by using my design skill to explore sustainable solutions and close the loop by applying reusable philosophy and using print-on-demand.
  • How I constructed my story narrative in the form of self-publish magazine to add value to my work, which led to collaborations with my local London council and like-minded organisations.
